The Summit ceiling guide

Summit XPS Ceiling Boards.
Choose the finish.
Plan the whole ceiling.

Bring thickness, profile, board lengths and room measurements into one clear material order.

Summit XPS Ceiling Boards provide thermal insulation through the board material itself. In a suitable ceiling installation, the exposed face also becomes the surface you see. Use the options above to check your chosen thickness, then plan the lengths and quantities around your actual rooms.

01 / Specify the product

A ceiling surface
with thermal resistance.

Summit XPS Ceiling Boards are rigid extruded polystyrene panels. Their closed-cell structure makes them a thermal insulation material as well as an option for the visible ceiling finish.

01

Start with the application

Are you forming a new ceiling, replacing damaged boards or planning a ceiling between exposed roof members? Describe the intended arrangement before selecting material. The supporting structure and fixing detail need to suit the proposed ceiling.

02

Choose the appearance

The profile influences the visible pattern of the ceiling. Decide whether you want a smoother surface or more pronounced lines, then ask for a sample of the exact board being quoted. Include your preferred board direction on the room sketch.

03

Order an actual board schedule

A total area is useful for an initial budget. An order needs thickness, profile, lengths and quantities. Preparing that schedule makes it easier to compare quotations and check the materials when they arrive.

Make your enquiry
specific to the room.

For Summit XPS Ceiling Boards, send a separate length and width for each room. Mark openings, bulkheads, ceiling steps and areas that follow the roof slope. A few labelled photographs help explain anything a simple rectangle cannot show.

Say whether your quotation should cover supply only or include installation. If the existing ceiling needs removal, identify that work separately. The board price cannot describe the cost of preparing an unknown surface or repairing an existing support structure.

When comparing brands, visit our XPS Ceiling Boards category. This page focuses on the Summit product and the choices needed to prepare your order.

02 / Match the thermal requirement

Compare the thickness.
Confirm the specification.

Review Summit XPS Ceiling Boards by thermal resistance as well as price. The figures below are calculated from the manufacturer’s published conductivity of 0.030 W/m·K.

30 MM / STANDARD RANGE

30mm Summit XPS

R1.00

Calculated board resistance · m²·K/W

This is the thinnest of the four options compared here. Use 30mm where it matches the project’s thermal and ceiling specification. Check the selected profile and supply lengths before basing an order on the displayed rate.

Check product options ↑

40 MM / STANDARD RANGE

40mm Summit XPS

R1.33

Calculated board resistance · m²·K/W

The 40mm option provides more board thermal resistance than 30mm at the same stated conductivity. Keep the finish and supplied lengths consistent when comparing the cost of changing thickness.

Check product options ↑

50 MM / STANDARD RANGE

50mm Summit XPS

R1.67

Calculated board resistance · m²·K/W

Consider 50mm when reviewing the next increase in material thermal resistance. It is one part of the complete roof and ceiling design; the installer or designer should confirm how it fits the required specification.

Calculation: thickness in metres ÷ 0.030 W/m·K, rounded to two decimals. Conductivity reference: Summit published product properties. Check current supplied-product data when specifying.

Board performance and roof performance are different figures

The values for Summit XPS Ceiling Boards describe the material layer. They do not establish the performance or compliance of every completed roof. Have the full assembly assessed for the building and application before selecting a thickness solely from a table.

03 / Choose your ceiling finish

The profile shapes
the finished appearance.

Summit XPS Ceiling Boards are offered in a published range of profiles. Confirm which profile can be supplied with your chosen thickness and length.

SMTG

Smooth tongue and groove

A smooth-face option with tongue-and-groove edges. Agree the finished joint appearance with your installer and ask to see a sample before ordering.

PITG

Pine tongue and groove

The pine-profile option provides a lined appearance. Consider the direction of the lines in relation to the room, windows and lights.

SBTG

Smooth bevelled tongue and groove

A bevelled profile makes the board junction part of the ceiling pattern. Confirm the supplied profile so the quotation describes the appearance you expect.

SMST

Smooth straight

A straight-edge option. Confirm the application and joint detail with the installer rather than assuming the same fixing arrangement as a tongue-and-groove ceiling.

Profile names and range: Summit XPS boards. Availability depends on the supplied specification.

Approve the detail
before the delivery.

When requesting Summit XPS Ceiling Boards, include the profile name on your enquiry. A description such as “white thermal ceiling” leaves too much room for interpretation. Ask the quotation to identify the thickness, edge profile and any finishing work.

Keep one approved reference for the finish: a sample, a clear photograph or an agreed drawing. Share it with whoever places the order and whoever installs the material. That helps prevent the purchasing decision and the installation expectation from drifting apart.

For a ceiling running into an adjoining room, discuss whether the lines should continue in the same direction. A sensible layout can make the transition easier to finish and may influence the most practical supply length.

04 / Compare the complete cost

A rate per m².
A price per board.
A material total.

Summit XPS Ceiling Boards prices become easier to compare when every quotation uses the same measurements and scope.

Select the thickness and an offered length above. The page uses the current product rate to calculate the cost of a complete board. Your room estimate then shows the number of boards and the resulting board-materials total.

The estimate for Summit XPS Ceiling Boards covers the board quantity. Ask for fixing accessories, delivery and installation to be priced separately so you can see what is included.

Check current pricing ↑

01

Check the square-metre rate

Match thickness and finish, and read the tax label beside the price. A rate shown on a different tax basis cannot be compared directly until both quotations are put on the same basis.

02

Calculate the supplied board area

Length multiplied by effective cover width gives the board area. For example, a confirmed 4.8m length covering 0.6m gives 2.88m². Multiply the rate per m² by 2.88 to calculate that board’s price.

03

Use whole-board quantities

The purchase quantity rounds up to complete boards. For Summit XPS Ceiling Boards, the material total should reflect the boards supplied, including the parts later trimmed off, rather than only the room’s measured area.

Read each line
of the quotation.

For Summit XPS Ceiling Boards, check whether a quoted quantity means square metres or individual boards. If the quotation gives boards, make sure their dimensions are stated. If it gives square metres, ask for the board schedule behind that figure so you can check the actual delivery.

Record any option that changes the rate, such as a different finish or supply requirement. When reviewing a revised quotation for Summit XPS Ceiling Boards, compare the quantities as well as the prices. A lower total can result from fewer boards or an omitted accessory, rather than a lower rate for an identical order.

Ask how long the quotation remains valid and when the required material can be supplied.

05 / Plan lengths and quantities

The direction matters.
So does the supply length.

Use the calculator for Summit XPS Ceiling Boards to compare practical board layouts before sending your enquiry.

Use room mode for a measured rectangle

Enter the two room dimensions and choose the direction the boards will run. Select an available length that spans that run, or use the button that finds the shortest listed length able to fit.

The rows across the room are rounded up to whole boards. The calculation assumes one full-length board per row and does not reuse offcuts between rooms. It makes the consequences of changing direction visible without pretending to be a complete cutting schedule.

For Summit XPS Ceiling Boards, confirm the usable cover width of the chosen profile. The published standard width is 600mm; the calculator must use the effective width appropriate to the actual supplied board.

Use area mode for an early allowance

If you have an area but no room drawing yet, divide that area by the coverage of the selected board and round up. This gives an initial allowance, not a decision about where joints and cuts should fall.

Before ordering Summit XPS Ceiling Boards for several rooms, measure each room individually. Record its preferred direction and supply length. An acceptable total area can still conceal a board too short for one room.

Add spare boards only where the job needs them. Explain whether the allowance covers handling, awkward cuts or future repairs, so the person checking the quotation understands how the quantity was reached.

Worked room example

A 5.1m × 4.5m ceiling

Assume a confirmed 5.4m board length, 0.6m effective width, and boards running along the 5.1m dimension. No additional spares are included.

Illustrative quantities — check your offered lengths
Room surface area 5.1 × 4.5 = 22.95m²
Required board rows 4.5 ÷ 0.6 = 7.5 → 8 boards
Area of one supplied board 5.4 × 0.6 = 3.24m²
Total supplied board area 8 × 3.24 = 25.92m²
Extra supplied area before spares 25.92 − 22.95 = 2.97m²

Measure the ceiling
that will be covered.

For a sloping installation of Summit XPS Ceiling Boards, measure along the ceiling surface. The horizontal floor plan alone will not describe the area or run length of a sloped ceiling.

Break an L-shaped room into clearly labelled sections and mark where they join. Plan narrow passages and returns separately. Ask the installer to review transitions before combining the quantities into one order.

Long boards also need a practical route into the building. Measure gates, doorways and stairwell access, and mention restrictions when requesting delivery. It is easier to resolve an access problem before selecting the final supply lengths.

Keep the estimate with your room drawing

Label each calculation with a room name and the date it was prepared. When a measurement or board direction changes, recalculate that room and replace the earlier estimate. This prevents two different versions of the Summit XPS Ceiling Boards order being used at the same time.

Ask the installer to identify any offcuts that can realistically be reused. The calculator does not assume that every leftover piece will fit elsewhere. A checked cutting plan may improve the final order, but it should still allow for the required fixing and joint details.

Confirm the final Summit XPS Ceiling Boards schedule before placing the order, particularly for a special-order thickness or length.

06 / Prepare for installation

Plan the supports,
fixings and finishing.

A quotation for Summit XPS Ceiling Boards is most useful when the material schedule and installation scope are clearly recorded.

Use the appropriate Summit fixing detail

Summit’s nail-up method uses supports, concealed clips and a compatible adhesive. Have the installer follow the current instructions for the actual application, including exposed or wind-affected areas.

Confirm suitable lengths to avoid unnecessary butt joints. Mark access openings and perimeter details before work starts. Ask the installer to identify the required clips, adhesive, trims and other fixing materials on the quotation.

Where Summit XPS Ceiling Boards will replace an existing ceiling, include removal, disposal and preparation as separate items. Agree how hidden defects discovered during removal will be assessed and priced.

Choose compatible finishes and fittings

Use compatible water-based finishing products and follow Summit’s guidance where sunlight exposure requires painting. Agree surface preparation and the final appearance with the installer.

Provide the lighting plan before fitting Summit XPS Ceiling Boards. Follow the relevant heat-clearance requirements and support heavier fittings from the structure. Electrical work and changes to fittings should be included in the job brief.

Arrange protected storage and careful handling of the board edges. Check the delivery against the quotation before installation begins, including quantities, thickness and the approved profile.

Application reference: Summit nail-up installation guide. Finishing and storage: manufacturer product guidance.

Include your complete buying brief

When requesting Summit XPS Ceiling Boards, send the thickness and profile, each room’s measurements, board direction and delivery location. State whether you need materials only or an installation quotation. Copy the calculator estimate and add your drawing so the quantities can be reviewed.

07 / Common buying questions

Before you order
your Summit ceiling.

These answers cover the decisions most useful when ordering Summit XPS Ceiling Boards.

Back to thickness and pricing ↑

Are Summit XPS Ceiling Boards the insulation or the ceiling?

The rigid XPS material provides thermal resistance. In a suitable ceiling arrangement its exposed face also forms the visible ceiling surface. That is why thickness, finish and the proposed installation should be considered together.

Which thicknesses are available?

Summit lists 30mm, 40mm and 50mm as standard thicknesses, with 60–100mm available by special order. This page compares 30mm, 40mm, 50mm and 80mm. Confirm the offered profile, length and lead time for the selected option before ordering.

How long are the boards?

The published range extends from 1.8m to 8m. Your order must use a length actually offered for the chosen specification. The selector lists the available choices entered for that option; a blank list means the length needs confirmation.

Do the same dimensions always produce the same quantity?

Changing board direction can change both the number of rows and the required supply length. For Summit XPS Ceiling Boards, compare the two directions, then choose a layout that suits the supports and intended appearance.

Does the calculator include clips and adhesive?

No. The total covers the estimated boards at the selected rate. Ask for the fixing materials required by your installation detail, together with trims, delivery and labour. The calculator’s copy button prepares enquiry text; it does not submit an order.

Will XPS soundproof my room?

Summit identifies this as a thermal insulation product and advises against relying on it alone as a sound barrier. If noise control is a priority, request an acoustic design for the complete ceiling assembly.

Can I compare Summit and Isoboard by thickness alone?

Compare the current thermal data, finish, supply sizes and complete quotation for each brand. Equal thickness does not by itself establish equal performance or the same ceiling appearance. Our category page provides the broader comparison.

What if I do not have accurate measurements yet?

Send the information you have, together with photographs and your location. Explain whether the work involves a new ceiling or replacing one. Ask which measurements are needed to turn an initial budget into a checked material schedule for Summit XPS Ceiling Boards.
