Knauf Insulation.
A clearer choice
for your ceiling.
Choose your thickness, understand the coverage and turn your ceiling measurements into a practical materials order.
Knauf Insulation Ceiling Roll brings flexible glass mineral wool blanket insulation to ceiling-level projects. Explore the four thicknesses below, learn what ECOSE® Technology means and use the live product options above to compare prices per roll and per square metre.
01 / Get to know the product
Comfort starts
above the ceiling.
Buying insulation is easier when you separate three decisions: the right product, the required thermal performance and the quantity for the job.
01
Ceiling-level insulation
Knauf Insulation Ceiling Roll is designed for pitched roof spaces insulated at ceiling level. It forms an insulating layer above the rooms below. It is a flexible blanket used within the construction, rather than a rigid ceiling board or a decorative ceiling finish.
02
Four thermal options
The range on this page covers four thicknesses. Each has its own published product R-value and pack coverage. Decide on the thermal specification before comparing quantities: a pack that covers more square metres does not necessarily provide greater thermal resistance.
03
A measurable order
Use your ceiling area and selected roll coverage to estimate the material required. The calculator rounds up to whole rolls and applies any allowance you choose. This gives you a useful starting point for checking the order with your installer.
Make the comparison relevant
When comparing Knauf Insulation with another product, look at the exact range, R-value, roll coverage and intended application. Brand names alone do not establish equivalent performance. Two rolls can look similar while carrying different technical specifications and covering very different areas.
Match the purchase to the project
For an existing home, establish what is already above the ceiling. For a new build, start with the specified roof and ceiling system. Bring that information to your Knauf Insulation enquiry so the quantity and product choice can be checked together.
02 / Material and roll format
The ECOSE difference.
The right roll format.
Knauf Insulation uses ECOSE Technology in this range. Understanding the binder and the packaging helps you identify the product you are ordering.
What is ECOSE Technology?
ECOSE is Knauf Insulation’s plant-based binder, used to hold the mineral wool fibres together. The manufacturer describes products made with this technology as having low VOC emissions and a natural brown colour. The binder contains no added formaldehyde.
These material characteristics are separate from thickness and R-value. An ECOSE label identifies the binder technology; you still need the product name and technical data to choose an appropriate roll for the ceiling.
For a project with an indoor-air-quality specification, use the relevant manufacturer certificates and declarations. Avoid treating a general product benefit as a substitute for the documents required by the person specifying the building.
Uncut and Combi-cut
Uncut rolls give the installer a full-width blanket to cut to suit the layout. Combi-cut rolls have partial cuts that allow the material to be separated into narrower widths. Check the exact format offered with your order, particularly where the installer has requested a specific pack.
Splitting a roll changes the strip widths, not the total amount of insulation in the pack. For example, two narrower strips can cover the same total area as the original full-width blanket when laid next to one another.
Keep different ranges distinct
Ceiling Roll, Multi Pack and Acoustic Roll are different Knauf Insulation product ranges. Do not transfer pack coverage or R-values between them just because their thicknesses match. This page uses the Ceiling Roll Uncut/Combi-cut specification.
03 / Compare the thicknesses
Four thicknesses.
One clear comparison.
Choose Knauf Insulation by the required performance, then calculate the number of rolls. These figures use the manufacturer’s South African product R-values.
Highest R-value in this selection
135mm Knauf Insulation
R3.38
Product R-value · m²·K/W
Compare this option first when the project specification calls for the greatest thermal resistance among the four thicknesses shown.
Intermediate thickness
100mm Knauf Insulation
R2.50
Product R-value · m²·K/W
Use this thickness where its published performance matches the specified construction and the requirements for the project.
Additional thickness choice
75mm Knauf Insulation
R1.88
Product R-value · m²·K/W
A further option for projects specifying this thickness. Check the complete thermal requirement before selecting a thinner blanket.
Thinnest option in this selection
50mm Knauf Insulation
R1.25
Product R-value · m²·K/W
Consider where a thin blanket forms part of the specified insulation design. Its larger pack area does not make it equivalent to a thicker option.

135 / Thickness guide
Choosing
135mm Knauf
135mm Knauf is the thickest option covered by this product page. If your specification calls for this thickness, assess the order using its own pack coverage. Do not reuse a roll count calculated for another brand: an identical thickness does not guarantee an identical roll size.
A clear materials list ensures everyone works from the same figures. Record the thickness, total ceiling area and any allowance alongside the whole-roll quantity. Keep delivery arrangements and installation requirements on the quotation as separate items.
When ordering 135mm Knauf, check that the selected variation matches both the product range and the pack format requested by the installer.
100 / Thickness guide
Choosing
100mm Knauf
100mm Knauf is an option for a project whose specification calls for this performance. It should be assessed against that requirement, rather than treated as a universal choice for every roof space. Confirm the intended system before changing a thickness shown on a building plan or quotation.
For budgeting, compare the cost of sufficient whole rolls. Price per square metre is useful for comparing material costs, but the final purchase quantity still depends on roll rounding and the layout of the ceiling.
If you receive two quotations for 100mm Knauf, check that both describe the same range and coverage. A different product format can change the quantity even when the thickness wording looks the same.
75 / Thickness guide
Choosing
75mm Knauf
75mm Knauf adds another choice between the thinner and thicker blankets. Select it when it fits the specified design. A limited space above the ceiling should prompt a review of the construction and performance requirements, rather than an automatic reduction in insulation thickness.
Where an installer proposes multiple layers, ask for the complete material schedule. It should identify the thickness and area of each layer. A one-layer quantity calculation cannot, by itself, describe a more complex installation.
Include 75mm Knauf by its full product description on your order, and confirm that the quoted pack format is available for the required delivery date.
50 / Thickness guide
Choosing
50mm Knauf
50mm Knauf provides the thinnest blanket in this selection. It may form part of a specified layered or upgrade arrangement, but it should not be assumed to provide a complete thermal solution for an otherwise uninsulated ceiling.
For an upgrade, first establish the condition and specification of the existing insulation. Missing sections, unsuitable material or previous building work can affect the plan. Describe those details when asking for advice rather than estimating an additional layer from a photograph alone.
Choose 50mm Knauf because the project requires it. Its extensive nominal coverage per pack is useful for calculating quantities, but coverage and thermal performance are different measurements.
Read the correct R-value column
The technical sheet lists South African and European R-values using different reference temperatures. The figures above use the South African column. These are material values, not a declaration of the complete roof’s performance or confirmation that every thickness suits every building.
04 / Plan the material budget
Knauf Insulation prices.
Compare like for like.
A useful price comparison starts with a matched specification and ends with the quantity you actually need to purchase.
Select a thickness above to see current Knauf Insulation pricing. The product options show the roll cost, while the comparison and calculator help translate that into a price per square metre and an estimated materials subtotal.
01
Start with the unit price
The displayed roll price applies to one whole roll of the selected variation. Check its thickness, coverage and VAT label before comparing it with another quotation.
02
Put coverage on equal terms
Dividing the roll price by its nominal coverage gives a material cost per square metre. This helps compare differently sized packs of Knauf Insulation without confusing a lower roll price with a lower cost for the area.
03
Check the complete quotation
Your purchase is based on whole rolls. Delivery and installation are excluded from the calculator’s materials estimate. Provide your delivery location and intended scope so those additional items can be confirmed.
05 / From measurements to materials
How much Knauf Insulation
will you need?
Measure the surface receiving Knauf Insulation, select the correct product option and review the allowance before finalising the order.
Measure
Work room by room
For a rectangular flat ceiling, multiply length by width in metres. Break an irregular layout into smaller rectangles, then add the areas. Include the passages and other spaces intended to receive insulation.
Calculate
Use the selected coverage
Divide the measured area, including any allowance, by the chosen roll coverage. Round up to the next whole roll. The Knauf Insulation calculator above performs this calculation from your selected variation.
Review
Check the cutting plan
Compare the total coverage purchased with the ceiling layout. A decimal rounded up can provide spare material, but it does not guarantee the offcuts will fit every remaining gap. Confirm the final allowance with the installer.
Worked example
One layer over 100m².
No extra allowance.
These calculations illustrate roll quantities only. The selected thickness must still meet the project specification.
| Option | Rolls | Coverage bought |
|---|---|---|
| 135mm Knauf | 12 | 108m² |
| 100mm Knauf | 9 | 109.08m² |
| 75mm Knauf | 7 | 107.52m² |
| 50mm Knauf | 5 | 114m² |
Why a materials subtotal can exceed area × price
If your measured ceiling area works out to a fraction of a roll, the order rounds up. Multiplying only the area by the price per square metre therefore may understate the cost of the whole rolls you need to buy.
Keep a copy of the calculator result with your Knauf Insulation enquiry. If you change thickness or adjust the measured area, calculate again so the quantity and price refer to the same selection.
What about two layers?
The calculator estimates the material for the area you enter at the selected thickness. If your design specifies two complete layers, account for both layers in the material schedule. Different thicknesses need separate calculations using their own coverage.
Do not enter the floor area once and assume the estimate includes every layer in a specification. Ask the installer to confirm how the Knauf Insulation order should be divided.
06 / Get ready for installation
Plan the access.
Protect the material.
Prepare the roof space before fitting Knauf Insulation, and keep the current product instructions with the job specification.
Agree the scope before ordering
Check who is responsible for measurements, product selection, installation and any preparation. Tell the installer about existing insulation, recent roof work and difficult access. A supply-only quotation covers a different scope from a completed installation.
Identify roof leaks and damaged areas before work begins. Knauf Insulation does not repair the roof covering or ceiling. Resolve those issues as part of the preparation so the materials are fitted into a suitable space.
Keep service access in the plan
Light fittings, electrical equipment and roof-space access need to be considered in the installation design. Have the installer follow the relevant equipment clearances and manufacturer guidance. Avoid covering services indiscriminately to create an apparently continuous blanket.
Store rolls properly
Keep the material dry, flat and protected from weather. The manufacturer’s transport packaging provides short-term protection; it should not be treated as permanent outdoor storage. Arrange a sheltered receiving area if the rolls will arrive before the installation team.
Check before the work is signed off
Review the completed coverage with the installer and keep the product labels for reference. Note any areas excluded from the work. If a later contractor moves the blanket to reach wiring or other services, arrange for the affected areas to be reinstated correctly.
For Knauf Insulation orders, a clear delivery date, agreed storage location and checked material list help keep the work organised from arrival to completion.

8 useful answers
Is the thickest option always the right one?
135mm Knauf has the highest product R-value among the four options shown here. However, the product choice must suit the specified construction. Use the required thermal performance and installation design to make the decision, then compare material costs.
Does every 100mm Knauf roll cover the same area?
No. Knauf Insulation offers different ranges and formats. The figures here apply to Ceiling Roll Uncut/Combi-cut. Check the complete product name and pack label when comparing a quotation, especially if it refers to Multi Pack or another roll range.
Can I use the 75mm option instead of a thicker blanket?
Only where the specified design allows it. 75mm Knauf has its own declared thermal performance. Confirm any proposed substitution with the person responsible for the specification rather than changing thickness solely to reduce the order cost.
Is a 50mm blanket enough for a new ceiling?
Do not assume so. Whether 50mm Knauf is suitable depends on the complete thermal design, including any additional layers. A thin blanket’s large pack coverage is a purchasing detail, not confirmation that it satisfies the building’s insulation requirement.
What makes ECOSE different?
ECOSE is the plant-based binder used in this Knauf Insulation range. The manufacturer identifies it with low VOC emissions and no added formaldehyde. It describes the binder technology; the exact roll’s thickness and R-value still determine the product specification you compare.
Is Ceiling Roll the same as Acoustic Roll?
No. They are distinct ranges. If your project specifies an acoustic product for a partition or another assembly, use that product’s own data. Do not select this thermal ceiling roll solely because the thickness resembles the acoustic specification.
Are delivery and fitting included in the price?
The calculator estimates materials only. Check the VAT label alongside the live prices, then confirm delivery and installation separately. Supply the delivery town or suburb and explain whether you require materials only or help arranging installation.
What information should I send for a quotation?
Include the product range, thickness, total area, estimated roll quantity and delivery location. State any requested pack format, timing requirements or uncertainty about measurements. These details make a Knauf Insulation quotation easier to check against your project.
