The Aerolite buying guide
Aerolite Insulation.
Choose with confidence.
A comfortable home starts with the right specification. Understand the thickness, compare the material cost and plan your order with clear, practical information.
Aerolite Insulation is supplied in rolls for fitting within the ceiling space. This guide explains what to compare before you buy, how to work out quantities and which details to confirm with your installer.
01 / Everyday comfort
What does
Aerolite Insulation do?
Make your choice around the building’s needs, then use the figures on this page to compare the available options.
01
Resist heat transfer
Aerolite Insulation helps slow heat movement through the ceiling. This supports a more comfortable indoor environment during hot and cold weather. The benefit in a particular home also depends on its roof, windows, draughts and other parts of the building.
02
Support acoustic comfort
The glasswool blanket absorbs sound within the construction. Aerolite Insulation can contribute to acoustic performance, but the result depends on the complete ceiling and roof assembly. It does not turn an ordinary ceiling into a soundproof system by itself.
03
Plan around whole rolls.
Each thickness has a stated roll size. This makes it possible to estimate the quantity before you order. Compare the selected option’s coverage with your measured ceiling area, then allow for the way the material will be fitted.
What is the product made for?
Aerolite Insulation is Isover’s flexible glasswool ceiling insulation. Soft Touch rolls are compressed for transport and storage, then unpacked for installation. The material sits within the ceiling space; it is not a plasterboard ceiling, a decorative panel or a replacement for a roof covering.
Start with the building.
A new ceiling and an existing roof space can need different preparation. Before buying Aerolite Insulation, identify the area being insulated, the condition of any existing material and the required thermal specification. That information helps avoid choosing a product simply because its roll price looks attractive.
02 / Find the right thickness
Three options.
Different performance.
Compare Aerolite Insulation by product R-value and coverage. Thickness, square metres per roll and price answer different questions.
Highest R-value of these three
135mm Aerolite
R3.38
Product R-value · m²·K/W
Consider this option when the project calls for the greatest thermal resistance within the range shown here.
Intermediate thickness
100mm Aerolite
R2.50
Product R-value · m²·K/W
Choose this option where its thermal performance matches the specified roof and ceiling construction.
Thin blanket / top-up applications
50mm Aerolite
R1.14
Product R-value · m²·K/W
A thinner option, including suitable top-up projects after the existing insulation has been assessed.

135 / Thickness guide
When to consider
135mm Aerolite
135mm Aerolite has the highest product R-value of the three options on this page. It is the option to compare first when the specification calls for this level of thermal resistance. Suitability still depends on the complete construction and the requirements for the building’s location.
For a larger order, the shorter roll length matters. You will need more individual rolls to cover a given area than you would with either thinner option. That does not make it poorer value: you are comparing a different insulation thickness and a different thermal performance.
Choose 135mm Aerolite by its specification, then use the calculator above to establish the whole-roll quantity and current material estimate. Keep the measured area on your quotation so the quantity can be checked before dispatch.
100 / Thickness guide
When to consider
100mm Aerolite
100mm Aerolite sits between the thinner and thicker options in this range. It can be selected where the required insulation specification calls for this thickness and performance. It should not automatically replace a thicker specified blanket simply to reduce the initial material cost.
For purchasing, the useful comparison is the cost of enough whole rolls for the project. A price per square metre gives you a common basis for comparing roll sizes, while the calculator accounts for the fact that you cannot order a fraction of a roll.
When pricing 100mm Aerolite, confirm the ceiling area, the allowance and the required performance together. If a contractor has provided a material list, use that specification as the starting point and resolve any differences before ordering.
50 / Thickness guide
When to consider
50mm Aerolite
50mm Aerolite is the thinnest option offered here. Isover identifies it for top-up use in appropriate existing installations. The first step is to assess what is already in the roof, including its condition, coverage and suitability for retaining beneath an additional layer.
A thin blanket is not automatically a complete solution for an uninsulated home. Neither a low pack price nor a large coverage area tells you whether it meets the project’s thermal requirement. For a new installation, have the required specification confirmed first.
Before choosing 50mm Aerolite for a top-up, tell your installer about the existing material and any uneven, missing or damaged sections. A photograph can help explain the situation, although access to the roof space may still be needed to assess it properly.
Product R-value is only part of the picture.
R-value measures resistance to heat flow. A higher product figure means greater thermal resistance for the material under the stated conditions. The complete roof and ceiling system has its own performance. Choosing Aerolite Insulation therefore involves both the product data and the building specification.
03 / Understand the price
Compare the cost
of the whole job.
Aerolite Insulation prices are easier to understand when you compare three figures: the roll price, the price per square metre and the total for the rolls you actually need.
Use the live product selector above for current Aerolite Insulation pricing. Select your thickness before calculating the order quantity. The material estimate follows that selection, so you can compare the options without relying on an old price written into a guide.
01
Price per roll
This is the cost of one whole roll of the selected variation. It is the unit used to calculate the materials subtotal. Compare the thickness and roll size alongside the amount.
02
Price per square metre
Divide the roll price by the nominal coverage. This lets you compare Aerolite Insulation material costs across differently sized rolls, but it does not make their thermal performance identical.
03
Your order total
Multiply the required whole rolls by the selected roll price. Check the VAT label shown with the price. Delivery and installation are excluded from this material estimate and need to be confirmed separately.
04 / Measure before you order
Turn room sizes
into roll quantities.
Start with the area that will receive Aerolite Insulation. Clear measurements make your estimate useful and help reduce ordering mistakes.
Step 01
Measure the ceiling
For a flat rectangular ceiling, multiply length by width in metres. Measure each room or section separately if that is easier. Do not substitute a pitched roof’s sloping area for the flat ceiling area.
Step 02
Add the areas
Add the sections receiving insulation and enter the combined figure in the calculator. Include passages or other spaces where required. Avoid counting the same area twice where room measurements overlap.
Step 03
Review the allowance
Use an allowance appropriate to the cuts and fitting involved. Whole-roll rounding may already leave spare coverage. A complicated roof layout can need a different allowance from a straightforward rectangular ceiling.
Worked example
A 100m² ceiling,
with no extra allowance.
The figures below are calculated from nominal roll coverage. They illustrate quantity only; they do not recommend a thickness for your building.
| Option | Whole rolls | Coverage bought |
|---|---|---|
| 135mm Aerolite | 17 | 102m² |
| 100mm Aerolite | 14 | 100.8m² |
| 50mm Aerolite | 9 | 108m² |
Why Aerolite Insulation quantities are rounded up
Aerolite Insulation is ordered in whole rolls. Dividing area by roll coverage often produces a decimal, so the result is rounded up. The extra coverage is a consequence of pack size; it is not a guarantee that every cut can be reused efficiently.
For example, a measured area of 100m² divided by 7.2m² gives 13.89 rolls. The order becomes 14 rolls. If you add a cutting allowance, run the calculation again because that allowance can increase the final whole-roll quantity.
If you do not know the area yet
Start with a room-by-room measurement list or a dimensioned plan. Note any spaces you intend to exclude and explain where access is difficult. A total floor area from a property listing is not always the ceiling area that needs Aerolite Insulation.
Keep the final measurement with the quotation. If the project changes, recalculate before the order is finalised. The calculator is a planning aid; accurate input and a checked specification remain essential.
05 / Prepare the ceiling space
Good preparation.
A better installation.
Plan access, check the roof’s condition and follow the current manufacturer’s instructions when installing Aerolite Insulation.
Check before the material arrives
Arrange an assessment of the roof space where needed. Identify leaks, damaged ceiling areas, existing insulation and services that affect access. Insulation is not a repair for a leaking roof; resolve those issues before covering the ceiling space.
Confirm who will install the Aerolite Insulation and what the quotation includes. Supply-only materials and a completed installation are different scopes. Ask whether preparation, removal of unsuitable old material and clearing packaging form part of the agreed work.
Plan your Aerolite Insulation installation
Record the chosen thickness, required area and any instructions from the person specifying the job. Where the construction differs between rooms or roof sections, flag this before ordering so the installer can plan the work.
Handling and fitting
Store rolls under cover in dry conditions. Isover’s instructions cover measuring between trusses, cutting the packaged roll to fit and laying the blanket above the ceiling. Plan access using suitable support; ceiling boards are not a safe walking surface.
Light fittings and electrical equipment need their specified clearances. Follow both the insulation instructions and the equipment requirements rather than covering fittings indiscriminately. The manufacturer’s technical sheet is linked below for the installation details.
Check the completed work
Ask the installer to review coverage, edges and access points before leaving. Keep Aerolite Insulation packaging information and your quotation for reference. If later electrical or roof work disturbs the blanket, ask for the affected areas to be checked and reinstated appropriately.

8 practical answers
Which Aerolite Insulation thickness should I buy?
Use the thermal specification for your building. 135mm Aerolite offers the highest product R-value among the options shown here, but the correct choice still depends on the roof, ceiling and project requirements. Confirm the specification before comparing total material costs.
Is the middle thickness suitable for every home?
No. 100mm Aerolite should be selected where its performance matches the required specification. Roll coverage and price cannot tell you whether a particular roof and ceiling assembly meets the requirements for the project.
Can I top up my existing insulation?
Potentially. 50mm Aerolite is identified by Isover for appropriate top-up applications. Have the existing material and the required final performance assessed first. Adding a layer should follow a considered specification, particularly where the old coverage is uneven or damaged.
Where do I find current Aerolite Insulation prices?
Select a thickness in the product options above. The page shows the current roll price and its price per square metre. Use the roll calculator for an estimated materials subtotal, then confirm availability and the final quotation.
Should I measure the roof or the ceiling?
Measure the actual surface receiving the material. For insulation above a flat ceiling, that normally means the ceiling area. If your design follows a roof slope, use the relevant sloping surface measurements and have the installation specification checked.
Does the estimate include VAT, delivery and labour?
Check the VAT label displayed with the live price and calculator estimate. The materials total excludes delivery and installation. Supply your delivery location and explain whether you need installation so the quotation can address the complete scope.
How soon does a compressed roll expand?
Isover states that the unpacked blanket recovers to full thickness within 24–48 hours. Follow the handling and installation instructions supplied with the product. Judge the installed blanket against its intended recovered thickness, rather than its compressed transport size.
What should I include in my enquiry?
Send the selected thickness, ceiling area, estimated roll quantity and delivery town or suburb. Add any timing requirements and explain whether your measurements or product choice still need checking. For Aerolite Insulation enquiries, these details help establish an accurate scope before an order is finalised.
